Fred R Allen's Story
I have had an incredible life. While working at Granite City Steel, I was told to report to the personal office . I asked why. Several of my co- workers said it was probably because I was to be reprimanded. When I arrived there and asked why they wanted to see me, saying, " Did I do something wrong? They said," No, we want you to be tested because we think you are college material, The test found that i had artistic abilities . i enrolled at SIU in Alton, graduated In 1963, and was hired to teach elementary art in Ladue, Missouri, one of Missouri's wealthiest school systems. In 1965, I enrolled at Illinois State University where I received my first Masters degree. I enrolled at SIUE in their Master of Fine Arts program in 1968 and also taught there one year while I received the first Master of Fine Arts degree given by SIUE. I moved to Kirkwood, Missouri and taught at Meramec Community College for 33 years as Professor of art. I retired in 2003, and opened a pottery studio in Old Town, St. Charles. y was on display in The St. Louis History Museum, The St louis Art museum in Forest Park, and Craft Alliance in University City as well as at many local and regional art fairs. At Meramec I was the recipient of the Faculty Lecture Award. For the past I5 years I have been donating my work to Operation Food Search where they sell it and feed the hungry throughout St Louis with the money raised. In 1967, I married the former Judy Loftus, also from Granite City who also attended ISU and taught Unified Studies at Parkway South Middle School in St. Louis County. We have three children. Beth graduated from John Burroughs and Northwestern University and has a PHD in art history from UCLA where she taught. She is currently doing freelance work in New York City. Julie graduated with honors from Loyola University with a degree in English. She is currently doing consulting work in marketing in Chicago. Our son, Robert attended Washington University and Missouri Baptist University and is currently a minister in the Kansas City, Missouri area. We have 4 beautiful granddaughters and currently live in O'Fallon, Missouri. I'd love to visit with some of my high school or college classmates.
